Treasures of a Scribe

In Matthew 13:19 we see that Jesus was teaching the Word of the Kingdom and when he taught those who were outside (without understanding) he taught them in parables.

The disciples asked him a question:

Matthew 13:10
And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?

And he answered:

Matthew 13:11
He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

He explained very clearly to them it is not given to those who are outside to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven.

And then Jesus said the following:

Matthew 13:51
Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord.

Then he says the following:

Matthew 13:52
Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

The word scribe here is the Greek word grammateus and it is where we get the English word for grammar.  It means – a writer, i.e. (professionally) scribe or secretary.

The word instructed here is the Greek word mathēteuō; and it means, to become a pupil; to disciple, i.e. enrol as scholar.

Now the next thing that is significant is that he said unto the Kingdom of Heaven.  He said that a scribe that is discipled unto the Kingdom of Heaven is able to bring out of his treasure (household) things new and things old.  This scribe of the Kingdom of Heaven is able to bring revelation by the Spirit of God relating to the Word of the Kingdom that is fresh and new and revelation of the Kingdom that is old or prior.  He has the wisdom of God to manage treasures old and new.

The word treasures here is the Greek word thēsauros and it means a deposit, i.e. wealth (literally or figuratively).  This is where we get the English word thesaurus which is a treasure of words.

In this age that we are a part of we have three types of scribes:  Scribes of the World (kosmos) system, we have Scribes of the Babylonian or religious system and we have Scribes of the Kingdom of Heaven.

It is very clear to understand the origin and motive of these types of scribes.  The Worldly scribe is only interested in his own glory and promotion.  The Babylonian scribe is only interested in his own glory and promotion.  This leaves the scribe of the Kingdom of Heaven.

The origin of the scribe of the Kingdom of Heaven is the heavenly Father.  This scribes desire and intent is the promotion and glory of the Heavenly Father and his Kingdom.  He/she is not interested in his/her own promotion or glory.  He/she is not looking for honor or the recognition that comes from mankind.  This  scribe has the following view:

John 8:54
Jesus answered, If I were to glorify Myself (magnify, praise, and honor Myself), I would have no real glory, for My glory would be nothing and worthless. [My honor must come to Me from My Father.] It is My Father Who glorifies Me [Who extols Me, magnifies, and praises Me], of Whom you say that He is your God.

Stand fast in righteousness and seek the honor that comes from the Father.  The Father honors those who honor his Will, Word, Way, and his Work.

Matthew 13:43
Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
